Tara: Hi. My name’s Tara and I’m a patient advisor at Rahal. A common question I get from patients is what are the scalp exercises and what is the purpose of the scalp exercises? The scalp exercises are intended for patients who are having an FUT procedure, or follicular unit transplant.

The scalp exercises are something you want to perform weeks, or even months, prior to your surgery date. You want to perform the exercises twice a day until your surgery date, for about ten to 15 minutes each time. The purpose of the self exercises is to help increase your scalp laxity. This allows for more grafts to be harvested which ultimately means more hair for you.

There are two different exercises, one intended for the back of the donor area and one for the sides of the donor area. I’m going to explain both exercises and then we’ll have Patrick do a demonstration for you.

The first exercise, again, is intended for the back of the donor area. What you want to do is clasp your hands together and place them flat on the back of your head, just above the ridge in the back of your scalp. You’re going to clasp your hands, push up towards your forehead, hold for two seconds, and push down, hold for two seconds, and repeat that motion.

The second exercise is intended for the sides of the donor area. So you’re going to place your hands flat against your scalp, push up towards the top of your head and hold for two seconds, push down, hold for two seconds, and again, repeat that motion.

One tip you want to remember is you want to make sure to apply enough pressure so that you feel your scalp moving and your hands don’t slide over your hair. You really want to feel your scalp stretching. So now Patrick will come in and demonstrate both exercises for you.

Patrick: Hello.

Tara: The first exercise is intended for the back of the donor area. Patrick is going to clasp his hands together and place them firmly against his scalp. He’s going to push up towards his forehead, hold for two seconds, and push down, hold for two seconds, and repeat that motion, up and down. Perfect.

The second exercise is intended for the sides of the donor area. Patrick’s going to place his hands firmly against the sides of his scalp, push up towards the top of his head, hold for two seconds, and down, hold for two seconds, and repeat that motion. Remember the tip, Patrick wants to apply enough pressure so that he feels his scalp moving and his hands aren’t sliding over his hair. Perfect. Thanks, Patrick.

That’s it for scalp exercises. If you have any questions, always feel free to contact us at Rahal. We’re here to help. Thanks for watching.
