Your Hair Transplant Procedure

Arrival at our offices
When you arrive on the morning of your procedure you will be greeted by one of our patient advisors. You will be asked to fill out some basic forms while Dr. Rahal and his surgical team prepare for your hair transplant surgery. Once this is completed you will be shown in to Dr. Rahal’s private office for your pre-op plan.

Pre-op consultation/review
Before your procedure begins, Dr. Rahal will do a final review of your goals and expectations and will work with you to determine the most effective use of your donor hair. This review is an integral part of the process: Dr. Rahal will listen to your wishes and ideas, take them into account, and make suggestions based on the thousands of successful hair restorations he has performed.

Donor area removal
Hair transplant surgery begins with harvesting the donor strip after application of local anaesthesia.  This part will take about 45 minutes.

Once the strip removal is completed, Dr. Rahal will close the donor area using the TRICO or trichophytic scar method. While Dr. Rahal is closing the donor site, technicians will begin separating follicular units from the donor area.

Recipient site creation and graft insertion
Dr. Rahal creates the recipient sites—small incisions that will receive the donor hair – At this time you will be offered a list of DVD movies to pick from for your viewing pleasure.

Recipient sites are created using the lateral-slit approach. This is the only surgical technique that mimics the proper alignment and distribution of hair as it occurs in nature.

After the initial recipient site incisions are made, technicians will begin to place the first wave of grafts. All technicians that place grafts have undergone an extensive training program to ensure accuracy and consistency.

Graft Growth Timeline

1-12 days post-op

  1. Each patient is different but the average patient can expect some mild swelling in the forehead area. The swelling usually begins on day three and is completely gone by the day six mark.
  2. The patient also develops scabs at the recipient sites and these usually fall off between 10 – 14 days.
  3. Any redness that has lingered after the surgery is usually gone by day seven and the recipient area is slightly pinkish for the next few weeks.

12-14 days post-op

  1. Between 12 – 14 days after the surgery the sutures are ready to be removed. This process can be performed by Dr. Rahal or by your local doctor or medical clinic.

3-5 weeks post-op

  1. Three weeks or so after your procedure you may begin to experience some shedding of the transplanted hairs. This is completely normal and is to be expected. This occurs due to the temporary dormant phase that all hair grafts go through after any hair restoration procedure.

1-3 months post-op

  1. The average patient can expect to see a few new hair sprouts coming through the surface of the scalp.
  2. This new growth period varies from patient to patient but the average is three months. .
  3. The new hair will be thin and fine but will thicken over time to grow through the scalp.

5-6 months post-op

  1. By the fifth to sixth month after the procedure the patient can expect to see substantial new growth. The new hair will be approximately two to three inches in length and the hair shaft will begin to thicken.

8-10 months post-op

  1. Between months eight and ten the patient will see a big difference. The hair will be longer and much thicker and the overall appearance will be one of greater density than even a few months before.

1 year post-op

  1. Usually at the one year mark from the procedure the patient will be at the maximum level of density
  2. The hair that is now growing will continue to grow for the rest of the patient's life and can be cut and styled in any manner.
