Am I Too Young for a Hair Transplant?

Hi Dr. Rahal. I’m only 24, and my hair loss has increased rapidly. It continues to be very thin as time goes by. I keep getting told that i’m too young for a hair transplant? I’m afraid of losing my hair. I’m lucky to live near your Toronto office and would like to schedule a consultation? Can you help?

Dear Karthi,

I’m sorry that you have to deal with hair loss at such a young age… but there is hope.

First, you’re not too young for a hair transplant… BUT we need to consider other options to take control of your hair loss first.

Before I get to that, I’d like to reassure you that you’re not alone…

25% of men have noticeable hair loss by age 21.

Hair loss is a very natural part of the aging process… and is overwhelmingly dictated by your genetic history.

How Bald Will I Be?

Take a look at your relatives hair loss pattern to get an idea of where you might be headed. This includes male relatives on your mother’s side as well as your father’s side, since both sides can contribute equally.

Here is what to look for…

Are there multiple men in your family that have hair loss… and if so to what degree? Is there a common hair loss pattern?

If yes, this could indicate your future hair loss pattern.

Don’t panic though. Realize that it’s NOT an exact science… only a clue.

If it looks like hair loss is in your future, then consider hair loss prevention medications such as Rogaine and Propecia (for men only).

Both are FDA-Approved… and proven to prevent and reduce hair loss.

These medications are not cures though.… and will only work if you continue taking them. If you stop, you will likely lose any hair you have gained within a few months.

Taking Rogaine and Propecia together…

It is also worth mentioning that taking Rogaine and Propecia together can thicken
miniaturized hair… the hairs that are thin and wispy on your scalp. This alone can provide some added coverage and density.

Only when hair loss prevention has been addressed… and it appears that your hair loss has stabilized, is surgical hair restoration recommended.

Let’s first understand what a follicular unit hair transplant is…

There are two hair transplant procedures that you want to consider… follicular unit hair transplant (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).

A “Rahal Mega Session™” or follicular unit hair transplant is a procedure that has been performed for over 20 years throughout the world.

In skilled hands it’s consistent and produces amazing, natural results.

Another benefit to FUT is that we can transplant over 16,000 hairs in a single session… so you can have great hair again in record time.

We call it a “Rahal Mega Session™”.

FUT requires that a strip of tissue be surgically removed from the back and sides of the scalp. The incision is then closed, which leaves a fine donor scar. The size of this strip varies greatly… but on average it can be 15cm to over 30cm in length and up to 2cm wide.

This may sound traumatic… but in reality the patient feels very little discomfort during the procedure. And the donor scar is easily concealed by wearing your hair slightly longer.

FUT has been the standard hair restoration procedure for 20 years… though the level expertise and competency does vary from one clinic to the next due to the skill of the doctor performing the procedure (as well as other factors).

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is the fastest-healing hair transplant available…

Next we have “Rahal FUE™” or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). This hair transplant procedure was introduced to North America around 2002… and for several years very few clinics were performing it.

This is due to several reasons… but the main reason has to do with the difficulty of the procedure. A high level of skill and experience are needed to perform the procedure proficiently and consistently.

“Rahal FUE™” involves the use of a very small circular punch tool that perforates the skin tissue and isolates each individual grouping of hair.

These groups or bundles are referred to as “follicular units”. Once the punch has perforated the skin tissue surrounding the graft it is gently released from the tissue and extracted from the scalp.

When performing such meticulous work over several hours, it’s easy to see why this procedure is frowned upon by some doctors due to fatigue.

Regardless, “Rahal FUE™” has become the procedure of choice at Rahal since there is no linear scar to conceal… so you can wear your hair in any style you choose — even “shaved.”

Rahal FUE™ is also the procedure that I recommend for younger patients.

I’m confident that I can help you…

I encourage you to schedule your 100% FREE private consultation today.

During your consultation, I’ll thoroughly examine your hair and scalp, diagnose your hair loss pattern, answer all your hair restoration questions and design your comprehensive, personalized “Hair Loss Treatment Plan™” that includes FDA-Approved medication to take control of your hair loss.

You’ll also discover if you’re a candidate for “Rahal FUE™” — the least invasive and fastest-healing hair transplant available (No Scalpel. No Stitches. No linear scar to conceal, so you can wear your hair in any style you choose — even “shaved.”)
