Spencer Kobren, founder and president of the American Hair Loss Association, talks about what inspired him to start a non-profit organization dedicated to hair loss sufferers. “I felt people needed a body that could provide authoritative information about hair loss.”

Spencer David Kobren is the founder and president of the American Hair Loss Association (AHLA). It is a national non-profit organization which recommends fewer than 50 elite surgeons worldwide.

The AHLA provides unlimited information and resources to educate the public, healthcare professionals and the mainstream media about the devastating effects of hair loss.

Mission

“Our mission is to provide unlimited information about hair loss and the hair loss industry. It’s an extension of The Bald Truth. There are no sales involved. When consumers contact us, we offer guidance and support. We want to give hair loss sufferers a safe place.

The American Hair Loss Association only recommends a handful of select and elite physicians. “We are looking for doctors that truly implement the art. They have to be a cut above the rest. Dr. Rahal is a huge part of what we do.”

“People need a body to provide authoritative information”

People contacted me for hair loss advice through my radio show and book website. This inspired me to develop the American Hair Loss Association in 2004. I felt people needed a body that could provide authoritative information about hair loss.

Talk to a hair loss expert

The main reason I created the organization is because I noticed at the time a lot of articles just contained myths and misleading information about hair loss.

Our goal is to get objective authoritative information out to the hair loss public.

What are the challenges faced by the American Hair Loss Association?

We want the conversation about hair loss to be more palpable to the media and society. It can be emotionally devastating for men and women.

It has been a struggle to get society to take common genetic alopecia seriously. However, I do believe we have been quite successful, for the most part, doing that now. Mainstream websites are using our information.

“They come to us if they have been burned by the hair loss industry”

Unfortunately, in some cases people come to us after they have been burned by the hair loss industry. We have about 55% of those who come here being women. They seek our help for information on hair loss. However, we don’t focus on surgery. This has enabled a much broader and bigger platform.

We are the only organization (the AHLA) that is recommended by Consumer’s Digest Magazine and Consumer Reports Magazine.

Suffer from female hair loss?

What are the skills and attributes needed to be recommended?

The doctors that are listed on the AHLA have to be recommended by the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons.

“Dr. Rahal has the staff and infrastructure to provide truly state-of-the-art hair transplants.”

We are looking for American Hair Loss Association doctors that truly implement the art. They have to be a cut above the rest. These doctors need a full-time dedicated and skilled staff. Results really have to be of the highest quality. They must be consistent.

Physicians that are recommended by the AHLA are required to have a greater ethical and professional responsibility. This is because of the lack of government regulation in the field of hair transplantation.

The requirements would seem pretty stringent but sadly in this industry a lot of practises do not provide state-of-the-art hair restoration.

“Dr. Rahal provides state-of-the-art hair restoration”

Dr. Rahal is definitely one of the physicians with the staff and the infrastructure to provide truly state-of-the-art hair transplants. He is a huge part of what we do. His work is of a consistent high standard.

 “We are completely objective”

People view us as an authoritative source of information globally. We do our best to guide people, and we do not accept any financial contributions.

What do you enjoy most about being the President of the AHLA?

There’s no doubt when I receive an email with someone saying that the AHLA has changed their life I feel that we have accomplished something. It makes me feel that my work is going in the right direction.

Take control of your hair loss

I will give you an example. A female hair transplant patient wrote to us the other day (she contributes to a lot of the hair loss forums). She told us how we helped her family. They all have alopecia. Until they found the information on the AHLA they really believed that everything out there was just trying to sell them something. They followed our guidance and they were all helped.

It was powerful to read.
