Tell me about yourself?
“I am 51-years old, living in Ottawa and retired.
Unfortunately, I have medical condition (ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia) that restricts my activities a great deal. Fibromyalgia causes pain in my tendons and ligaments, along with the side effects of fatigue.
I do love reading though. This has always been my preferred pass time, and remains something that I can do.
When did you notice your eyebrows thinning?
In 2002, I noticed my eyebrows were getting thinner. I had suspected thyroid issues at the time, so I think it correlated. It was a gradual thinning over the years. Then in 2008 you could barely discern my brows.

How did it make you feel?
Losing my eyebrows was gradual, but once they were truly gone, I felt devastated. Every time I looked in the mirror I saw a faded and deficient woman staring back. It wasn’t me. I was struggling with my illness – and on top of that – now I had no eyebrows.
My brows were always a distinctive feature that shaped my face. They would accentuate my eyes, and soften my expression. They were a key part of my femininity. Losing my brows added to my distress that I was already feeling due to my illness. I felt bad, and I looked awful.
Carol felt like she was being robbed of her femininity when her brows gradually disappeared as a result of an illness. It was an extremely distressing time.
What made you decide to do something about it?
I spent around 10 minutes every single morning penciling my brows on, just to look human. As I didn’t have any hair at all, the pencil had nothing to blend into, so they just looked painted on and very unnatural.

The chore of penciling eyebrows was not only time consuming, but it was also very restricting. I became so self-conscious during the day. I was constantly worried that my eyebrows would wear off.
The sad part was that when I was younger, I had very bold and beautiful brows. It was something I never even cared about before, but now this was having such a huge impact on my life. All I wanted was to feel good about myself again.

What eyebrow products or treatments did you try?
