300 jours après 2700 FUT (+ 1100 FUT en 2012) . Je comprends que mes cheveux sont pâles et que les résultats sont différents d’une personne aux cheveux foncés. Il est vrai que le résultat est bien naturel. Ma déception est le vertex, il faudrait en ajouter mais je n’ai pas les moyens. Quand Dr Pires m’a dit “on va mettre les greffons surtout sur la moitié avant de la tête”, j’ai accepté, mais je regrette qu’on n’ait rien mis sur le vertex.

I understand that my hair is pale and that the results are different from a person to the dark hair. Nevertheless I did havee a total of 3800 grafts (in two operations).  My disappointment is the vertex, it would be necessary to add some but I do not have the means. When Dr. Pires said to me “we should put the grafts on the front half of the scalp”, I accepted, but I regret that we didn’t put any on the vertex.

As indicated, the hair you see on those photos are not those transplanted by Rahal in 2013 (2775 FUT) but from 2012 transplant of 1100 FUT in Montreal. Those transplanted at Rahal have not yet started to grow on these photos. I’ll send more photos later in July.

Comme indiqué les cheveux qu’on voit sur ces photos ne sont pas ceux transplantés chez Rahal en 2013 (2775 FUT) mais les 1100 FUT transplantés à Montréal en 2012. Ceux transplantés chez Rahal n’ont pas encore commencé à pousser sur ces photos. J’enverrai de nouvelles photos plus tard en juillet.

These pictures show some days, and few months, after first transplant of only 1100 FUT (not at Rahal).
Before that transplant, I had almost no hair left on top.

I have undergone, this March 18, a second transplant, this time at Rahal Clinic in Ottawa, and for 2700 FUT (strip method).
I already had a first 1100 FUT transplant in January 2012 in another clinic in Montréal.

My choice for Rahal was based partly by the testimony of a young French (Frontal Tool) who received 3500 FUT a few years ago and of which he lengthily told on another forum with several very convincing photographs.

Note that Rahal Clinic offers a plane travel refund for the patients from abroad (not my case because I am from Quebec).

I am well in my 40s. My baldness began at 21 years, it slowed down in my 20s and 30s thanks to the medicamentous shampoos (eucalyptus, tar, germs and sulphur), but it had advanced severely these last years.

I had been thinking about a transplant for at least 15 years.

I had a first transplant (only 1100 FUT, limited results) in Montreal, January 2012, fourteen months before that of Rahal.
Mostly good words about my Montreal doctor but he was much more expensive than Rahal (see below).

I have to say that Rahal’s personnel displays much more precaution in general.

In the previous weeks, members of the personnel provided me much information related to the operation, and they showed a great availability for any question which I could have.

I notice that my Montreal doctor (3000+ transplants, 20 years experience) did ALL himself (except the cutting of the follicules of course), whereas at Rahal technicians (nurses?) were implied.

Moreover, it is not Rahal himself who operated me but Dr. Pires (of portuguese origins but speaks French too) but Dr. Rahal was never very far during the operation.

Also, it is not Dr. Pires who planted my grafts, but a lady (nurse?) whose name I forgot now.

The scar goes almost from one ear to the other while following the curve of the occiput. Thus it looks scary at first, but I have confidence that will be arranged.

No significant pain, nor puffiness.

The scar from Montreal transplant became almost completely invisible after a few months.

In the worst case, for those who would wish, that can be corrected with a permanent or semi-permanent make-up for about 500$.

Two notes:

1. I envisaged to make 2000 FUT (my expectations were not very high), but Dr. Rahal convinced me to make a total 2500 FUT and I accepted.

After the operation, Dr. Rahal explained to me (in English, whereas Dr. Pires speaks French) that they finally put 2775 grafts. In that case, the patient normally has to pay the extra.

The Montreal doctor had explained me that they do not throw away any graft, which explains why often a larger number of grafts are transplanted. I suppose that it is the same at Rahal’s.

The morning of the operation, Dr. Pires explained that he would insist on half of the front of the head because this is what one first sees, of course.

I accepted his plan, but after the operation I had some regret for not putting more on the vertex. This is the one aspect that is annoying me right now.

But I will wait for the grafts to grow (with the assistance of Minoxidil 5% and Propecia) to decide what I will do or not to complete the whole.

Will I add some on the vertex with a 3rd operation or simply camouflage with Toppik and/or a discrete permanent make-up? Or with the right hairdo perhaps everything will be at my satisfaction.

I estimate that I will need some 1500 more FUT on the so that it would be perfect. That’s a lot of money, especially for my small means, and I had to give it much second thought, but it is like a “life project” and I do not regret it, not for the moment at least.

In comparison, Frontal Tool (he was 28 years old) still had much hair on the vertex, therefore his 3700 grafts placed mostly on the front half of the scalp gave a spectacular result.

To complete the vertex, I will have the possibility to choose another cheaper method, the FUE (method of the “punch”) which is more appropriate for this area of the head.

The two operations proceeded very well.

The operation at Rahal lasted 6 hours for 2800 grafts, and naturally I fell asleep on some occasions during that period!
But the nurse told me that it actually was helping them because I was not moving at all.
My Montreal doctor had took almots as much time, 4,5 hours, for only 1100 grafts. So at Rahal they work fast.

I was ready to come back to Montreal the same evening, since my mother was accompanying me and that she could have driven the car, but Dr. Rahal insists to see his patients the next morning, which annoyed me a bit.
The Montreal clinic let me go the same day and everything was fine.

Thus the next morning, the meeting took place and an employee explained me in details the procedures and precautions for the following weeks.

I did not need to take any pain killing drug.

I now have to wait for the hair to grow. The grafts fell after two weeks (which is normal), they will start to grow in June, and we will be able to judge result in November, or better still in Februrary 2014, since you have to wait 2-3 growth-cycles, starting from June and each cycle lasts three months.

In short, I am very satisfied with my experince at Rahal’s clinic which I highly recommend.

Note that the hair you see on top are those from the first transplant (January 2012) which were trimmed by Rahal for March 2013 transplant.

Je viens de subir ce 18 mars une deuxième greffe de 2700 FUT (méthode bandelette) à Ottawa.
J’avais déjà reçu 1100 greffons FUT à Montréal en janvier 2012.

Mon choix de cette clinique a été basé en partie par l’expérience d’un jeune Français (Frontal Tool) qui a reçu 3500 FUT il y a quelques années et qui l’a raconté longuement sur un autre forum avec plusieurs photos très convaincantes.

Ma calvitie a débuté il y a fort longtemps, à 21 ans, elle a ralenti dans la vingtaine et la trentaine grâce aux shampooings médicamenteux (eucalyptus, goudron végétal, germes et soufre) mais elle avait beaucoup progressé ces dernières années. Je songeais à la greffe depuis au moins 15 ans.

J’ai eu une première greffe à Montréal, pas chez Rahal (1100 FUT, donc résultats très limités) en janvier 2012, soit 14 mois avant celle de Rahal. Que de bons mots pour mon médecin montréalais mais sensiblement plus cher.

En outre, à la Clinique Rahal le personnel se montre beaucoup plus attentionné en général.

Dans les semaines précédentes, des membres du personnel de Rahal m’ont fourni beaucoup d’information à propos de l’opération, et ils montrent une grande disponibilité pour toute question que je pourrais avoir.

Mon médecin montréalais (3000+ greffes en 20 ans d’expérience) fait TOUT lui-même (sauf le découpage des folllicules bien sûr), alors que chez Rahal plusieurs personnes sont impliquées.
En outre, ce n’est pas Rahal lui-même qui m’a opéré mais Dr Pires (d’origine portuguaise mais aussi francophone) mais Dr Rahal n’était jamais très loin pendant l’opération.

Enfin, ce n’est pas Dr Pires qui a implanté mes greffons, mais une dame dont le nom m’échappe.

La cicatrice va presque d’une oreille à l’autre en suivant la courbe de l’occiput.
Donc elle fait peur sur le coup, mais j’ai confiance que ça va s’arranger.
Pas de douleur significative, pas d’enflure.
La cicatrice de Montréal est devenue presque complètement invisible après quelques mois.
Au pire, pour ceux qui le souhaiteraient, ça se corrige avec un maquillage permanent ou semi permanent pour 500$.

Deux remarques:

1. Je prévoyais faire 2000 FUT (mes attentes ne sont pas très élevées), mais Dr Rahal m’a convaincu de faire 2500 FUT au total et j’ai accepté.
Après l’opération, Dr Rahal m’a expliqué (en anglais, alors que Dr Pires parle français) qu’ils m’ont finalement mit 2775 greffons. Normalement, les chirurgiens demandent dans ces cas de payer pour le surplus de greffons.

Mon médecin montréalais m’avait expliqué qu’ils ne jettent aucun greffon, ce qui explique que souvent un nombre plus grand de greffons sont implantés. Je présume que c’est la même chose chez Rahal.

2.
Le matin de l’opération, Dr Pires m’a expliqué qu’il insisterait sur la moitié du devant de la tête car c’est ce qu’on voit le plus bien sûr.
J’ai accepté son plan, mais après l’opération je regrette un peu qu’on n’en ait pas mit un peu sur le vertex.
C’est l’aspect qui m’agace le plus actuellement. Mais on verra.
Je vais attendre la repousse (et avec l’aide du Minox 5% et le Propecia) pour voir ce que je vais faire ou non pour compléter le tout.

Vais-je retourner pour en ajouter sur le vertex ou simplement camoufler avec le Toppik et-ou un maquillage permanent discret, en attendant de retourner, peut-être, dans 3-5 ans pour une 3e greffe complémentaire?
Ou alors avec la bonne façon de coiffer peut-être que le tout va me convenir.
Il faut dire que je n’ai pas à ce sujet l’anxiété qu’ont certains hommes au début de la vingtaine.

J’estime qu’il me manque encore 1500 FUT sur le vertex pour que ce soit parfait.
C’est beaucoup d’argent, surtout pour mes moyens limités, mais c’est comme un “projet de vie” et je ne le regrette pas, pas pour l’instant du moins.

En comparaison, Frontal Tool (il avait 28 ans) avait encore beaucoup de cheveux sur le vertex, donc ses 3700 FUT placés surtout sur la moitié avant de la tête ont donné un résultat spectaculaire.
À remarquer que pour compléter le vertex, je pourrai choisir une autre méthode, comme le FUE (méthode du “punch”) qui convient pour cette région de la tête.

Les deux opérations se sont très bien déroulées.

L’opération chez Rahal a duré 6 heures, et naturellement je me suis endormi à quelques occasions pendant cette période.

À Montréal, l’opération avait duré presqu’aussi longtemps (4,5 heures) pour seulement 1100 greffons. Donc chez Rahal ils travaillent très vite.

J’étais prêt à retourner à Montréal le soir même, d’autant plus que ma mère m’accompagnait et qu’elle aurait pu conduire la voiture, mais Dr Rahal insiste pour voir ses patients le lendemain matin. Cela m’a un peu agacé.

Donc le lendemain matin, la rencontre a eu lieu et une employée m’a expliqué en détails les procédures et précautions à suivre dans les semaines suivantes.

Je n’ai eu besoin de prendre aucun médicament anti-douleur.

Il reste maintenant à attendre la repousse. Les cheveux greffés sont tombés après deux semaines (ce qui est normal), ils vont commencer à pousser au mois de juin, et nous pourrons juger du résultat en novembre, ou mieux encore en février 2014, car il faut attendre 2-3 cycles de pousse du cheveux, à partir de la date de début de repousse (juin) et chaque cycle dure trois mois.

En résumé, je suis très satisfait de mon expérience à la Clinique Rahal que je recommande vivement.
