What causes hair loss in older women?

Dr. Anthony Bray, a family-practice doctor on Pearl.com gives several reasons why older women experience hair loss, particularly thinning hair.

Reasons include…

  • Hypothyroidism.
  • Cushing’s Syndrome, caused by the overproduction of the hormone cortisol.
  • Malnutrition or any illness associated with significant weight loss.
  • Physical stress as a result of major surgery or illness.
  • Psoriasis or fungal infection (tinea capitis) or any other condition that affects the scalp.
  • Certain medications or chemotherapy treatments for cancer.

If the cause of hair loss is still unclear, it’s important to seek a primary-care doctor or dermatologist.
